News from Coatlism Press, announcing a period closed to new submissions

Due to excessive backlogging in our inbox, we are only two people working on Coatlism, we are going to close submissions until further notice. Anything sent from February forward will be overlooked. We are sorry, but the cat and the day job are seeking attention too. We wish you luck placing your work at many of the other great publishers (see our links on the right column for other publishers). Or if you want to try our contests, we will hold a book length contest again, with deadline in October 2009, so get working on that.

Right now, we have two books in production: Poetry is Dead by Michael Frissore (winner of the Coatlism Book Prize 2008) and Farrago Soup by Doug Draime.

About the name: Quetzalcoatl was a reincarnation of the first hero twin of the Mayab Pop Wuj, Junajpu. The word quetzal is a bird, a symbol of spirit or abstract thought, and coatl is a snake, a symbol of matter or concrete thought. Poetry is often about the details, the small bits of matter. For example, the only way to achieve social justice is to be specific about it not rely on (abstract) language that has in most ways become meaningless.

Also, links to our site are very appreciated. The idea is to become a marketing tool for authors to spread their work. The more you spread the site to other poets and other people the better this will work.

Submission Guidelines

Prepare your chapbook.

Please get it all together as a word file (.doc or .rtf) and attach it to an email. Be sure to include title page, about the author statement, acknowledgments/credits, table of contents, poems. Cover art is appreciated and encouraged. You can include it in your Word file or send it as a separate jpeg or psd file. Previously published poems are acceptable as long as the work as a whole is new and as long as acknowledgments are made.

Send your poetry chapbooks.

Provide a publishing history or a link to a publishing history.
State if you've had a full-length book or chapbook published before.

A note about what you need in the email portion of your submission:

In the subject line of your email, please include: Chapbook Submission — Genre — Title. For example, if you are submitting a poetry collection titled "Breakdancing Apples", write:

"Chapbook Submission — Poetry — Breakdancing Apples"

Include a short biography or any other cover letter information that you think might be interesting. We'd like to know a bit about you.

As of now there is no reading fee or any other charge incurred by the author.

Coatlism Press will be publishing 2 - 5 poetry chapbooks a year. There are not enough quality chapbook publishing sites. See our links for others. Our aim is to provide really high-quality books that are quite affordable so that authors can sell them and/or use them as a marketing tool. Nobody will be getting rich off this endeavor. Warren Buffet is not yet a shareholder. However, there is room to make some rocking books with powerful, sharp, experimental poetry -- see links -- for an idea of what we like. Technology is changing the world of publishing and we look to exploit those changes for talented poets flying under the radar.
